For Tutor and Mentor Trainers

CRLA is pleased to announce details on its 3rd Summer Institute to train the trainers in mentor and tutor training programs. Our goal is to provide attendees with the training and tools for developing programs for mentors and tutors that meet professional standards and best practices.

Attendance at this new training is limited to provide attendees with the opportunity work in small groups and benefit from in-depth, personalized interaction with the instructors. Attendees will leave the Institute with

Learning Objectives:

  • Investigate core concepts for developing and enhancing mentor and tutor training programs
  • Design mentor and tutor training programs using best practices and standards
  • Develop and demonstrate outstanding training, presentation, and facilitation skills
  • Investigate and appraise best practices for hiring, supervising, and evaluating tutors and mentors

The Mentor Trainer Track topics include:

  • Examining mentoring from the organizational level (purpose, function, and definition of mentoring)
  • Exploring theoretical frameworks which support mentor programs (developing goals, curriculum, and policy, student development)
  • Unpacking the role of the peer mentor
  • Designing effective programs (identify and explore core program components)
  • Designing peer mentor training curriculum (active training model, assessment, developing your program cycle)
  • Examining best practices of mentoring

The Tutor Trainer Track topics include:

  • The Tutor Training Program Cycle
  • How to align training goals with university mission
  • Strategies for analyzing current training practices to find opportunities for improvement
  • Planning staffing needs and hiring processes to best meet program needs
  • Key skills for supervision and evaluation of tutors
  • Important learning theories relevant to tutor training and development
  • Lesson planning based on standards, outcomes, and assessments
  • Active and interactive training implementation strategies
  • How to assess whether training strategies are improving the quality of your tutoring program

  • WHAT ARE THE INSTITUTE TRACKS?

    Participants will sign up for one of the following tracks:

    • Mentor Trainer Track: Mentor program coordinators who train/supervise college/university mentoring programs, such as peer academic coaches, peer mentors, classroom leaders, FYE student facilitators, etc.
    • Tutor Trainer Track: ? Tutor program coordinators who train/supervise all types of college/university tutors
    • Each track is strictly limited to 40 participants

    WHAT IS CRLA?

    CRLA is a group of student-oriented professionals active in the fields of reading, learning assistance, developmental education, tutoring, and mentoring at the college/adult level. CRLA is inherently diverse in membership. CRLA’s most vital function and overall purpose is to provide a forum for the interchange of ideas, methods, and information to improve student learning and to facilitate the professional growth of its members.
