Dissertation of the Year Award

College Reading and Learning (CRLA) is comprised of leading researchers and practitioners within the fields of college reading, developmental education, and learning assistance at the postsecondary level committed to enhancing student academic success. This Dissertation Award is intended to promote and recognize outstanding research within our fields and is presented annually to a recent graduate of a doctoral program for dissertation excellence.
Any person who has defended a doctoral dissertation related to college reading, developmental education, student success, and learning assistance at the postsecondary level education may apply for the award up to two years following conferral of degree. The applicant must apply or currently be a CRLA member prior to submission.  Applications must be submitted by December 31 annually and will be reviewed immediately following, between January-February. The focus of the research MUST be on a topic related to the areas listed above. 

Please submit an abstract of your research (up to five pages, single-spaced, with one-inch margins, and size 12 Times New Roman font) for masked review along with this application. All submissions will be evaluated using the same criteria. The abstract should address the following areas:

  1. Research question(s) or hypothesis(es)
  2. Significance of study to the postsecondary student success, developmental education, college reading, learning support/assistance, etc.
  3. Research design
  4. Findings
  5. Conclusions and implications for practice
  6. References

All submissions must be received no later than December 31 of each year. Submissions will be reviewed immediately in January-February. The recipient of this award will be notified by February 28.
The award winner will be invited to present their research at the subsequent College Reading and Learning annual conference and will have their conference fee waived, if the research is presented.  A picture of the award winner along with the abstract will be posted in the CRLA newsletter and on CRLA’s social media platforms.
